The Wangee Park Interactive Multi Sensory Room was established in 1998 with support from Dept of Education and Training, the Disadvantaged Schools Program and the Variety Club. This multi sensory environment provides opportunities for the development of the senses in a fully interactive setting. Through this motivational and fun learning environment, students are encouraged to develop communication skills and choice making skills, which can lead to an understanding of the nature of cause and effect. These opportunities can promote the development of self advocacy and help students "own their learning" in a unique and exciting way.

The
interactive Bubble Tube, Infinity Tunnel, Mirror Ball and Effects
Projector all stimulate vision, encouraging students to look
spontaneously and explore their environment as they make colourful and
exciting images on the plain white walls. The ultra violet lighting in the
black room promotes visual discrimination and hand eye coordination.
The Fibre Optic curtain, ball bath and music bed all provide opportunities for tactile learning, helping students to develop a greater awareness of touch and motivating them to develop skills in hand eye coordination. The sensory room also provides a learning environment that focuses on music and sounds. The music bed is actually a platform built to contain 2 large audio speakers, with an air mattress on it. When students are placed on this mattress they can hear and feel the music, which is vital for students with significant hearing loss. Through a movement sensor the Interactive Sound Beam allows students to "play " music on an electric keyboard with only the slightest movement of an part of their body. |
